Due to government-mandated retail closures as part of the covid-19 safety procedures, the company filed for bankruptcy in 2020. The brand and website were acquired, but not the shop network, which resulted in the closure of 124 retail locations across the United Kingdom.

Since then, Boohoo has worked to expand Debenhams‘ online and global presence, including forming a collaboration with the Kuwait-based Alshaya Group. The arrangement gives the retail company exclusive rights to operate storefronts and local e-commerce in select Middle Eastern nations. From the fourth quarter of the year, Boohoo Group brands will be available in Debenhams stores and on local e-commerce.

Debenhams has launched a new marketplace, powered by SaaS platform Mirakl, to “meet evolving customer demand” and expand its product offering to over 70,000 additional items. The collaboration aims to help the company build a strong online presence with the eventual goal of being the UK’s largest marketplace for fashion, cosmetics, sports, and homeware.
