The Delhi Metro network could soon transform into a major shopping hub of groceries and other stuff, thanks to a new plan that’s about to be set in motion.

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is launching a virtual shopping app this July. The app, called Momentum 2.0, will enable commuters to purchase various stuff and collect their orders from their destination stations. What is more, commuters will also be able to make bookings for last-mile connectivity on the app.

Given the huge number of people that take metro trains everyday, this plan has the potential to generate big money for the businesses involved.

The first phase of the plan will cover 21 stations. Currently, the installing of virtual stores and smart lockers where orders will be kept till the products are collected, is on.

“The close-loop testing of app is going on for overall performance. The installation of smart lockers and virtual stores is also going on. The app is expected to be launched by July-end,” Times of India reported quoting Anuj Dayal, principal executive director of corporate communications at DMRC.

The smart locker facility will have 72 lockers. There is provision to add another 24 lockers later.

DMRC will look into the outcome of the first phase and then take a call on further expansion of the project. According to metro officials, there’s scope to expand the service to all stations of the network.

Commuters will also be given the option to buy stuff directly from the virtual stores at stations. A 65-inch screen will display product images at the virtual stores.

According to the ToI report, the app will give access to instant features, including booking bikes, e-rickshaws and cabs, as well as timetables and routes of feeder, DTC and cluster buses from metro stations.

ToI said citing a statement by a metro official: “It will provide the users the convenience of shopping for groceries and other essential items at the metro stations while waiting for the train. Selected brands will display their products and services on the app through extended reality tools, and travellers can simply use a QR code mechanism to shop for the goods of their choice. The immersive and dynamic content at these virtual stores will bridge the gap between digital and real-life shopping.”

On the app, users can also access additional features such as instant recharge of Metro’s smart cards and smart payment, including insurance, electricity, gas payments and FASTag, the report said.

Users will also get detailed information on the app about facilities available at stations, ToI reported. These include location and condition of gates, lifts, escalators, platforms, train timings, occupancy of coaches and space availability. Real-time information on train arrival time and exit gates will also be available, it said.
