Men's suit brand PN Rao completes 100 years, to re-enter women's wear biz

Bengaluru‘s oldest men’s fashion brand PN Rao on Thursday announced it will re-enter the women’s business wear segment as it joins a handful of the city’s brands that have completed 100 years. What began as one small store on MG Road in Bengaluru in 1923, PN Rao now has seven outlets including two in Chennai.

PN Rao, in fact, started with designing garments for officers and ladies of the erstwhile British empire in the Cantonment area of Bengaluru. Post-Independence, the founder’s eldest son PN Panduranga Rao learnt the art of gents pattern making which led to the brand branching off into men’s wear, the firm’s partners Machender Pishe, Chandramohan Pishe, Naveen Pishe and Ketan Pishe told a media-conference. The brand later stuck to only men’s suits.

The PN Rao, the firm’s partners said, would cater to the business attire demands of both men and women, meeting their evolving tastes and setting new benchmarks. “Now the situations are completely different in a boardroom, women are taking over in every field. Therefore we want to focus on strong and confident business women,” Naveen Pishe said.

The company’s management said they planned to take their brand to other cities of India after penetrating the southern market.

“South India is a low-hanging fruit for us and after this we will be targeting the north as well,” the partners said, and added that the brand was using a sustainable method of production, with the largest bespoke tailoring factory in the country completely relying on solar energy.

The company said they produce about one lakh pieces of garments a year, and their customers came from all strata of society.
