Puneet Chhatwal, CMD, Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL), has said that it is time companies in the tourism and hospitality sector focus on the triple bottom line approach of people, planet and profitability to become responsible businesses with commitment to sustainability framework. Chhatwal was speaking after unveiling the new sustainability goals of the hotel company for 2030 called ‘Paathya’.

He said that any business which wants to be future ready has to focus on sustainability and hospitality businesses, being brand ambassadors of any destination, cannot afford to ignore environmental sustainability and inclusive growth.

‘Paathya’, Chhatwal said, is IHCL’s commitment to walk an extremely collaborative path in creating a shared value proposition with stakeholders in creating a sustainable world. He said that the Paathya framework is built on six pillars – environment stewardship, social responsibility, excellence in governance, value chain transformation, scalability of business and preservation of heritage.

The Taj Group chief said that the Indian hotels have the opportunity to bridge the gap between H1 and H2 performance and grow both the numbers significantly if they dedicatedly focus on the domestic market.

In each pillar, the company has set short and medium term goals. Chhatwal said that the IHCL hotels will strive to become 100 per cent single use plastic free by 2030. Similarly, the hotel company will strive to manage the entire waste produced processed on site and reuse 100 per cent wastewater produced at hotels through a foolproof waste water management system. Other ambitious targets on the environmental sustainability front include making all hotels ‘EarthCheck’ certified, sourcing 50 per cent of energy from renewable and green sources; procuring 50 per cent raw materials locally, etc.

On the energy conservation side, the Paathya has a vision to convert 50 per cent of the guest parking space for EV charging. Chhatwal said that the hotel company will strive to make all business meetings 100 per cent ‘Green meetings’ through sustainable set up.

In the social responsibility front, the hotel company commits itself to train 1 lakh youth for relevant skills in the country in the next 5 years. Chhatwal said that the hotel company will focus on ‘gender progressive’ recruitment with a target to have minimum 25 per cent women in all departments of the hotel company by 2030.

In the cultural and heritage conservation front , every hotel under the IHCL will strive to promote local art, culture and heritage and there will be 100 per cent adoption of the heritage sites and monuments in the vicinity of the Taj hotels.
