Responding to widespread criticism regarding the exorbitant prices of snacks at its multiplexes, cinema chain PVR Cinemas has announced the introduction of two offers on snacks and drinks, claiming it is an “unbeatable price”. The announcement comes after a journalist highlighted the bill of an average-sized popcorn and Pepsi at a PVR cinema hall. In an attempt to address the issue, PVR said it has introduced two offers.
The controversy began earlier this month, when a journalist shared a photo of his bill from PVR Noida, showcasing the exorbitant prices he paid for a regular-sized tub of cheese popcorn and a same-sized Pepsi. In his social media post, he highlighted how the cost of these snacks was nearly equivalent to an annual subscription of Amazon Prime, expressing concern over the affordability of movie outings with family.
“Rs 460 for 55 gm of cheese popcorn, Rs 360 for 600 ml of Pepsi. Total Rs 820 at @_PVRCinemas Noida. That’s almost equal to annual subscription of @PrimeVideoIN. No wonder people don’t go to cinemas anymore. Movie watching with family has just become unaffordable,” Tridip K Mandal said on Twitter and Instagram.
The journalist’s tweet went viral on social media, resonating with numerous movie-goers who criticized multiplexes for their inflated snack and beverage prices. With over 2.5 million views, 22,000 ‘likes,’ and 4,600 retweets, the tweet has gone viral.Responding to the viral tweet, PVR Cinemas acknowledged the importance of every opinion and announced updates for movie-goers across India.
In the announcement on new pricing, PVR said it has introduced two exclusive offers to address the concerns. The first offer includes a combo of burger & samosa, and 450 ml Pepsi & Sandwich, priced at just Rs 99 each from Monday to Thursday, between 9 am and 6 pm. The second offer, valid from Friday to Sunday, entails “bottomless popcorn” with unlimited refills and “bottomless Pepsi.” However, it didn’t mention the price for its weekend offer.
