Zomato confirms plans to lay off 3% of staff nationwide

Food ordering app Zomato confirmed in a report that it will lay off nearly 3% of its staff across the organisation. This comes soon after a multitude of tech giants and social media sites decided to lay off some of their employees.

Zomato stated that the layoff will be based on regular performance.

“There has been a regular performance based churn of under 3 per cent of our workforce, there’s nothing more to it,” said a Zomato spokesperson.

The company at present has nearly 3,800 employees. Zomato had last laid off about 520 of their employees which makes up about 13% of its staff, in May 2020 in response to the slump in business following the covid pandemic.

The layoffs come soon after three top level exits from the company in the last few weeks.

Zomato’s co- founder Mohit Gupta quit the organisation on Friday.

“Over the past few years, I have seen Deepi (Managing Director and CEO Deepinder Goyal) become an even more mature and confident leader who is now completely capable of leading the business into a bright future with all of you by his side. It is with this confidence that I am deciding to move on from Zomato to seek the other unknown adventures that life holds for me. As I look ahead, I am full of excitement for the vision that Zomato, Blinkit, Hyperpure and Feeding India are building towards,” Gupta said in his note.

Mohit Gupta’s exit follows Rahul Ganjoo, who was the new initiatives head, and Siddharth Jhawar, the former head of Intercity Legends service, who both left earlier this month.
